- In 2019 there were 175 pedestrian traffic deaths in the State of New Jersey
- Nationally 6,205 pedestrians died in 2019
- 2019 had the highest number of pedestrian fatalities since 1988
- In 2020 there were 191 pedestrian traffic deaths in the State of New Jersey
- Nationally 6,721 pedestrians died in 2020
- Although miles traveled in 2020 decreased by 13% (due to the Coronavirus pandemic) pedestrian fatalities in New Jersey increased by 9% and nationally pedestrian fatalities increased by 4.8%
On April 1st 2010 the New Jersey new crosswalk law went into effect. This law states New Jersey motorists MUST STOP for pedestrians within a marked crosswalk. Prior to April 2010 New Jersey motorists were only required to YIELD to pedestrians within a marked crosswalk
Pedestrians
- Cross at Corners and within marked crosswalks when possible
- Yield the right of way to vehicles if crossing outside of crosswalks
- Look left and right before crossing
- Obey traffic signs and signals
- Do NOT assume that cars will stop for you
- Wear reflective clothing at night
- Failure to obey state law carries a $54 fine plus court costs
Motorists
- STOP for pedestrians within marked crosswalks
- Watch for pedestrians when turning on red
- Obey speed limits
- Do not block crosswalks
- Keep your windshield clean for maximum visibility
- Be alert for pedestrians at all times
- Failure to obey state law carries a $200 fine plus court costs, 2-point license penalty, 15 days community service and license surcharges
